Why We're Deliberately, Proudly Boring
The fitness world thrives on new ideas. Most of them aren't new. Here's how we think about training — and why we're not interested in chasing the next thing.
Somewhere along the way, fitness became entertainment. And with it came a constant stream of new concepts, new frameworks, new philosophies — each one positioned as a breakthrough, a paradigm shift, the thing that changes everything.
We're skeptical of most of it. Not because the underlying science is wrong — often it isn't — but because very little of it is actually new. What looks like a revelation is usually a repackaging of something exercise physiologists figured out decades ago, given a fresh name and a social media presence.
Zone 2 training. Muscle confusion. Polarized training. Periodization. These aren't bad concepts. Some of them are genuinely useful. But they aren't new methodologies — they're established physiological principles with new branding. And when they arrive dressed up as breakthroughs, they pull attention away from the fundamentals that actually produce results over the long haul.
At Steady, our philosophy is deliberately, proudly boring. Here's what we mean by that — and why we think it's the most useful thing we can offer.
The Science Hasn't Changed Much
The foundational principles of endurance training and strength development have been remarkably stable for a long time. The mechanisms behind aerobic adaptation, lactate threshold, muscular force production, and periodization were worked out over the course of decades — largely through the work of coaches and exercise scientists who didn't have Instagram accounts but were paying very close attention to what made athletes faster.
That body of work is still the foundation of every credible training program today. It hasn't been replaced. It's been refined, extended, and in some cases misapplied — but the core hasn't moved.

This isn't an argument against learning or updating based on new evidence. When good research changes what we know, we update. But the bar is evidence — not influence, not trend cycles, not the fact that something has a compelling name.
The Coaches Who Got It Right
The training frameworks we draw from weren't invented yesterday. They were developed and tested over decades by coaches who worked at the highest levels of the sport and documented their methods carefully enough that we can still learn from them.
Arthur Lydiard — New Zealand, 1950s–1990s Pioneered high-mileage aerobic base training and formalized periodization for distance runners. His athletes — including Peter Snell and Murray Halberg — were dominant at the 1960 Olympics. Nearly every modern training system traces some lineage to his principles.
Jack Daniels — USA, 1960s–present Exercise physiologist and coach whose training intensities — Easy, Threshold, Interval, Repetition — gave coaches a precise, science-backed vocabulary for pacing. His framework remains one of the most widely used in structured run coaching.
Renato Canova — Italy, 1970s–present Redefined marathon training through highly specific, race-pace-targeted workloads. His work with Kenyan runners produced multiple world records and pushed thinking on how elite athletes can sustain training volume and intensity together.
Greg McMillan — USA, 1990s–present Built a practical, accessible coaching system on Lydiard-influenced foundations. Known for bridging the gap between elite methodology and the everyday competitive runner — a bridge we find ourselves crossing constantly.
Bill Bowerman — USA, 1950s–1970s Co-founder of Nike and legendary University of Oregon coach. Introduced the hard/easy training principle to American running — a deceptively simple idea that remains one of the most important structural concepts in endurance training.
Peter Pfitzinger — USA/New Zealand, 1980s–present Exercise scientist and two-time Olympic marathoner whose training plans for competitive age-group runners brought serious periodization to athletes below the elite level. A model for how to translate research into practical programming.
These coaches disagreed with each other on plenty of specifics — mileage volume, how much threshold work, when to introduce speed. Their debates are still worth reading. But they shared a common foundation: training is a systematic process of building physiological capacity over time, and shortcuts don't hold up.
Methodologically Agnostic
We don't have a proprietary system. We're not here to tell you there's one framework that applies to every runner at every stage. What we are is methodologically agnostic — meaning we draw from the full body of evidence and established practice, then apply what fits the person, the season, and the goal in front of us.
That's not a cop-out. It's a commitment to not letting brand identity override good coaching judgment. If Daniels' threshold framework is what serves you right now, that's what we'll use. If the structure of a Lydiard-style base phase is what your training needs most, that's where we'll go. The methodology follows the athlete, not the other way around.
What "Steady" Actually Means
The brand name isn't accidental. Steady is the thing. Not the big training week or the breakthrough workout — the consistent, disciplined accumulation of load and recovery over weeks, months, and seasons.
It's also, quietly, a counter-argument to the fitness culture we keep seeing. Every influencer with a new training concept, every rebranded form of aerobic base work, every infomercial selling a 90-day transformation — they all share an implicit promise: that there's a smarter, faster path if you just know the right thing. Most of the time there isn't. The path is the one the great coaches have always described, and it mostly just requires showing up.
We build programs around progressively increasing load, adequate recovery, and training intensities matched to specific physiological targets. We periodize across seasons. We don't add complexity for its own sake, and we don't chase novelty. When the evidence supports updating a practice, we update it.
The Principles We Come Back To
Regardless of which specific framework a training plan draws from, a few principles show up reliably across everything we've found to be true in coaching and in the literature.
1. Aerobic base first The aerobic system is the engine. Everything else — speed, strength, race-specific work — builds on top of it. Rushing past this phase to get to the exciting stuff is one of the most common and costly mistakes in runner development.
2. Hard days hard, easy days easy Bowerman's principle is still correct. The tendency to run moderate on easy days and moderate on hard days — instead of truly recovering and truly working — blunts adaptation and accelerates fatigue. Most runners run their easy days too fast.
3. Progressive overload, not random load Training stress has to increase over time to drive adaptation — but it has to increase in a structured way. Arbitrary big weeks, inconsistent intensity, and missed recovery all undercut the signal you're trying to send to your body.
4. Strength is part of running Endurance athletes who strength train consistently are more resilient and, over time, faster. Not because lifting is magic — because running is a force production activity and the body adapts to the loads it's given.
5. Consistency compounds The greatest predictor of long-term performance isn't any single training cycle — it's how many training cycles you've completed without significant injury or burnout. Staying healthy and consistent over years beats any clever periodization scheme over weeks.
What We're Not
We're not going to tell you we've invented something new. We're not going to repackage established science with a different name and present it as a breakthrough. We're not going to build a program around a trend that will look dated in three years.
What we will do is take the principles that have held up — through the careers of athletes, through decades of research, through the work of coaches who genuinely understood the physiology — and apply them with care to your specific situation.
That's it. It's boring in the best possible way. And it works.
